3D Acoustic-Structure Interaction of Ultrasound in Fluids for the Manufacture of Graded Materials

Functionally graded materials engineered to meet specific requirements are being increasingly sought after for advanced engineering projects, yet the possibilities for their manufacture lag behind their design. The ability to control the porosity of a cellular material is one such method for adding functional gradients within materials. A novel
technique using ultrasound to control the porosity in reacting polymers shows potential to effectively mass-manufacture porosity tailored polymeric foams. In this work the pressure field in a metastable polymer produced by multiple ultrasonic sources is
modeled at distinct stages of the polymerisation reaction.

Automata, robots and androids have been a creation and fascination for humans over centuries.  From Maria (Metropolis, 1927), R2D2 and C3PO (Star Wars, 1977), WALL-E (2008), The Terminators (1984, 1991, 2003) to Transformers (2007), they have been portrayed as our friends, adversaries, alien to almost human, invaders and enslavers or as our saviours and trusted companions. These portrayals in the movies have reflected and perhaps influenced our opinion of them. Join us for an amusing evening reviewing our relationship with these technologies as reflected in their portrayal in the movie industry.

Manufacturing Functionality: from SFF to truly SFF

Solid Free Form (SFF) fabrication, also known as Rapid prototyping (RP) or Layered Manufacturing (LM), creates arbitrary 3D shapes directly from Computer-Aided Design (CAD) data. It has been around for two decades now. From its early age it demonstrated tremendous advantages for the Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) industry compared to traditional manufacturing methods such as CNC machining or casting. The venues for exploration appeared endless until users started to hit a ceiling; the name ‘rapid’ became almost ironic because the layering process is a very slow one, the palette of materials to handle is limited and the advertised label ‘net-shape’ is ‘near-shape’ – on a lucky day-. We are now over the hype of SFF, RP and LM but still have needs to create heterogeneous structures that have intrinsic multifunctionality. The Multifunctional Materials Manufacturing Lab in Loughborough University works on new manufacturing methods that allows a truly free form fabrication and the engineering of composition and structure for the creation of materials that are smart, responsive to their environment and possess synergistic properties that enhance their behaviour. These types of high performance materials offer great promise in fields such as bioengineering and transport (i.e. automotive and aerospace).

Mathematical Modelling of the use of Ultrasound to Tailor Polymers

Materials whose internal porosity can be tailored during the manufacturing process could be of use in a wide range of applications such as bone scaffolds (to help new bone grow from stem cells).  A recent method for achieving such a manufacturing process involves the acoustic irradiation of a reacting polymer foam which then results in a final sample with a graded porosity.  This talk will present the first mathematical model of this process. The polymerisation process is complex involving, for example, bubble dynamics, evolving rheology, two phases, reaction kinetics, and gas diffusion.  In addition, the model has to include the effects of the irradiating ultrasound.  The model I will present treats the evolving fluid as a multimode Oldroyd B system and will focus on a single moving bubble boundary using a Lagrangian frame of reference.  After looking at the role that inertia has on the dynamics of the system, a multi-bubble model is constructed that generates a heterogeneous bubble size distribution shaped by the ultrasonic standing wave pattern.

Best Free Paper for our work on Prosthetic Devices

Our collaborators Susan Hillman and James Hollington, from the SMART Centre, NHS Scotland, have been awarded Best Free Paper for our  ‘Clinical Interpretation of ISO 16840-2, Measurements for Wheelchair Seating Cushions’ presentation at the Posture and Mobility Group (PMG) National Training Event.

Their stand also attracted a lot of interest from clinicians, manufacturers and the ISO and BSI committees.

This collaborative project is focused on checking the clinical relevance of the BS ISO standard 1640-2:2007 on Wheelchair seating for the determination of physical and mechanical characteristics of devices intended to manage tissue integrity, in this case, wheelchair seat cushions. Our paper can be read here: PMG 2012.

‘Our Global Future’

Just back from the Engineers without Borders UK Research Conference. It was held in the Royal Academy of Engineering, in London. Beautiful venue. Easy to reach and you can check the time on the Big Ben itself.

Iain Downie came along, as was presenting the work we are doing on a biomimetic cool box.

The Conference was really interesting in both research (i.e. interesting concepts of fridges in the Sahara, waste management in Malawi and wind turbines comparison in Netherlands, among others) and education (i.e. embedding the global dimension and sustainability in the Engineering curriculum) arenas.

Eve Walkden (Uni of Southampton) gave a really inspiring presentation comparing the mechanical features and forces/reactions of an I-beam and a tree trunk (and branches), and on the alignment of fibres. A tree is a massive cantilever, did you know that?

Rebecca Drake and Daniel Miles were with me when we presented the ‘bamboo hut‘ project, the implementation in India, the capacity building ingredient of this project, and the optimisation of the design we are currently working on.

It was important for me that both Rebecca and Daniel were there, because the point i was trying to make is that design and planning is all very well. Optimisations and improvements. You can go on forever and never build anything. However, they went to India with our designs in their backpacks and built it. I am very proud of them.

Now that we are working on the next generation of bamboo hut (using their feedback), i hope this can also be tested in India, with the locals, in the near future. I will come back to these lines to report all about it.

 

Crowdsourcing publications

The team has been busy in the last few weeks and our efforts have crystallized into Journal and Conference papers.

“Putting the crowd to work in the knowledge-based factory” has been accepted for publication in to the Advanced Engineering Informatics Journal, special issue on the Cognitive Factory; and  “Outsourcing labour to the Cloud” is accepted for publication in the general issue of the International Journal of Innovation and Sustainable Development.

Paola DiMaio will present in Dubai our paper on Library Searches, a joint project with the National Library of Scotland: “Towards Crowdsourcing translation tasks in library cataloguing”, IEEE International Conference on Digital Ecosystems and Technology (DEST), Special Track on  “Web Based Harnessing of Human Collective Intelligence”, 12-15 April 2010, Dubai, United Arab Emirates.
