On the occasion of our attendance to the EWB Research Conference to present our work on bamboo as a structural material for low-cost housing in India, I wanted to share some impressive SEM pictures of the bamboo we are studying to build the huts on that side of the world.

This species is the Phyllostechys pubescens (also known as moso bamboo, or dried yellow bamboo). My colleagues at  Edinburgh Napier University, Prof Callum Hill and Dr Barbara Keating have acquired these beautiful images of my bamboo rings.

Speaking about perfection! Nature gifts us with structures of an enormous beauty that keep even the best design engineers humble.

The EWB Research Conference will be held in London on the 4th March at the Royal Academy of Engineering, ‘Our Global Future
